or Sweden or Estonia they learn a lot in very little time where students in the United Arab Emirates, they
spend a lot of time and they learn very little and the challenge for Turkey is also not so much you know
to increase the volume of learning time but more to work on the quality of instruction to increase pro-
ductivity in education.
In the past you know we could teach people once for the lifetime teaching them you know routine
cognitive skills. Today the kind of things that are easy to teach and sometimes easy to test have also
become easy to digitize to automate. They are disappearing from our labor markets.
This future is with teaching people to you know navigate complexity to manage complex ways of
thinking, complex ways of working. In the past our education systems just needed to sort people. Our
economies only needed a few well-educated workers. Today we need everyone and of course that com-
mands a very different caliber of teachers in the past in a teachers would deliver prefabricated content
to their student. Today teachers need to be creative designers of innovative learning environments. They
do not just need to be great instructors but also very good coaches, good mentors, good facilitators,
good evaluaters. Of course you know those people don’t like to work in schools that are organized like
factories. They prefer entrepreneurial flat collegial working environments.
Let’s look through those transitions in a bit more detail. You know our education systems have figure
out how to educate second-class robots you know people who are good at repeating what we tell them.
But what makes us human in the digital age just about you know 10 years ago we got those little devices
into our hands. A few years later, the real world and the virtual world began to integrate and suddenly
everybody got connected but these wonderful developments also had some dark sides.
Navigating the truth became much more complicated. 20 years ago when you were reading a book
you know you could just read it from a to z. It was carefully curated. Often you know by experts approved
by goverments When you didn’t know the answer to a question, you could look it up in encycloedia. and
you could trust the answer to be true.
Today you look up information on Google and you know nobody tells you what is right and what is
wrong and what is true and what is not true. Now what our pisa data show I said just about you know
three percent of students in Turkey can reliably distinguish fact from opinion when the context becomes
complicated. This is important to improve.
Also you know the digital world connects everybody with everyone. But often it connects us with
people who you know think like us, look like us work like us. It’s actually harder for young people to ex-
perience diversity in our society. Another important task for the School of the Future, some people have
compared this with a race between education and Technology.
You know before the first industrial revolution neither technology nor education made a big difference
for the vast majority of people but then you know the industrial revolution suddenly moved technology
ahead of skills of people and he created a huge amount of social pain. People were not ready for this.
But then you know we built the public schools that we have today. We made people compatible with the
ideas of the industrial economy and that created you know generations of prosperity but now we see
the same thing happening again.
You know the digital Revolution changing everything and Technology once again gets ahead of the
skills of people and we are seeing you know even in Turkey young people graduating from University
having difficulties finding a good job and at the same time. Turkish employers say we cannot find the
people with the skills we need now how do we move again? You know education ahead of the technologies
of our times and that is the question that we need to look at today.
Knowledge is expanding exponentially everywhere around us and it’s filled with so many facets
so many ideas and actually all these ideas come with people. That’s also so important learning is not a
transaction phenomenon. Learning is always a social a relational phenomenon.
We always learn with people what young people will remember you know 10 years from now from
